Morocco Sahara Desert Travel Guide: Where, When & How
The Moroccan Sahara has two main dune regions, Erg Chebbi near Merzouga and Erg Chigaga near M’Hamid, connected to Marrakech by the Draa Valley. The best time to visit is October to April, when days are 20-25°C and nights cool; summer regularly exceeds 40°C. You need at least 3 days from Marrakech to sleep in the dunes, and 4 days to do it at a comfortable pace. Which parts of the Sahara can you visit in Morocco?
Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) is the most famous erg, with a compact field of tall orange dunes rising up to around 150 m. It is easy to reach by paved road, which also makes it the busiest, with dozens of camps at the foot of the dunes.
Erg Chigaga (M’Hamid) is Morocco’s largest dune field, stretching roughly 40 km, and it is only reachable by 4x4 track or several days of camel trekking from M’Hamid. Camps are spread out and far apart, so it is the choice for silence and a wilder feel.
The Draa Valley is the road to M’Hamid: 200 km of palm groves, mud-brick kasbahs and ksour between Ouarzazate and the desert. Aït Benhaddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar, is on the way from Marrakech.

When is the best time to visit the Sahara in Morocco?

October to April is the season we recommend for anything longer than a night. Christmas, New Year and Easter are the busiest weeks, so book ahead.
How many days do you need for the desert?
- 2 days / 1 night: only realistic from M’Hamid, Zagora or Ouarzazate. From Marrakech it is a long transfer with almost no desert time.
- 3 days / 2 nights: the minimum from Marrakech to reach Erg Chigaga or Erg Chebbi and sleep in the dunes.
- 4 days / 3 nights: our recommendation. Two nights in the desert and time for camel riding, sandboarding and a stop in the Draa Valley.
- 5 to 7 days: a camel trek from M’Hamid to Erg Zahar or Erg Chigaga, living at nomad pace.
What should you pack for the Sahara?
- Light, loose, covering clothes in cotton or linen for the day
- Warm layers for the evening: fleece, down jacket, hat; thermals in December and January
- A scarf (chèche) against sun and wind, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen
- Closed, comfortable shoes for sand and dunes; sandals for the camp
- Head torch, power bank, a small first-aid kit and hand sanitiser
- Cash in dirhams for tips and small purchases; there are no ATMs in the dunes
How do you sleep and move around in the desert?
Accommodation ranges from a traditional nomad camp (tents, mattresses, blankets, shared toilets, dinner cooked over a fire) to a luxury camp with proper beds and private bathrooms, plus guesthouses in M’Hamid and Zagora before or after the desert.
For getting around you can choose a 4x4 to cover long distances and reach the heart of Erg Chigaga in a day, or camels and walking for a slower, quieter immersion. Many travellers combine both: 4x4 to the dunes, then a short camel ride at sunset.
How do you respect local culture and stay safe?
Dress modestly in villages, ask before photographing people, accept mint tea when it is offered, and be discreet with food and drink in public during Ramadan. Drink more water than you think you need, avoid sun between 11:00 and 16:00, and follow your guide: the tracks beyond M’Hamid are not signposted and should not be driven without local knowledge.

Can you visit the Sahara from Marrakech in one day? No. The nearest true dunes are 8-9 hours away. One-day “desert” trips from Marrakech go to Agafay, a stony area an hour from the city, not the Sahara.
Is Erg Chigaga better than Merzouga? It is wilder and less crowded, and the journey through the Draa Valley is more varied. Merzouga is easier to reach and has more camps. Choose Erg Chigaga for a real desert feel, Merzouga for convenience.
Is the desert safe for families? Yes. Private 4x4 tours and short camel treks work well with children, and camps adapt meals and pace. Avoid summer and keep the driving days short.
