The classic circuit heads from Ouarzazate towards Agdz, then down the Draa Valley to Zagora, Tamegroute and M'Hamid. From M'Hamid the tour truly enters the Sahara: tracks, dunes, oases, camp and open spaces.

If you are already in Ouarzazate, it makes far more sense to head straight south than to go back to Marrakech. The route through the Draa Valley, Zagora, M'Hamid and Erg Chigaga is more coherent, with less pointless driving and more time for the landscapes. Marrakech remains a good option for travellers starting their stay in the red city; Ouarzazate suits those already in southern Morocco or who want a more direct desert departure.
