Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas – Draa Valley – M'HamidDeparture from Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka pass and down the Draa Valley to M'Hamid El Ghizlane, the gateway to the desert. Dinner and night in a fixed camp.
  2. Day 2: Trek M'Hamid – Sidi NajiMeet your nomad guide and the camels that carry the luggage. About 3 hours of walking through the palm grove to Sidi Naji. Bivouac set up in the dunes, dinner and campfire.
  3. Day 3: Trek Sidi Naji – Erg ZaharSecond day of trekking (3-4 hours) to the wild dunes of Erg Zahar. Sunset from the top of the erg and night in a bivouac.
  4. Day 4: 4x4 Erg Zahar – Erg ChigagaTransfer by 4x4 with lunch in an oasis, then arrival at Erg Chigaga, the largest dunes in Morocco. Free time on the dunes, dinner and a musical evening in the nomad camp.
  5. Day 5: Erg Chigaga – M'Hamid – MarrakechSunrise on the dunes, breakfast and the drive back via M'Hamid to Marrakech, arriving in the evening.

Frequently asked questions

What level of fitness is needed?

Two walking days of 3-4 hours on sand at a relaxed pace. Anyone in reasonable shape can do it; the camels carry everything.

What is the difference between Erg Zahar and Erg Chigaga?

Erg Zahar is smaller and wilder, reached on foot. Erg Chigaga is the largest dune field in Morocco, about 40 km long, reached by 4x4, where you sleep in a nomad camp.

Is there a camel ride at Erg Chigaga?

A sunset camel ride can be added as an option at the camp.

Is this a private tour?

Yes. All our departures are private, in small groups of 1 to 8 people, with your own vehicle, driver and local guide. Dates are flexible and the programme can be adapted to your group.

What should I pack?

Light, breathable clothes for the day and a few warm layers for the evening, comfortable closed shoes, a hat, sunglasses and sun cream. Blankets are provided, but bring a sleeping bag if you have one for extra comfort.
